Information


Abraham was born in Maassluis in 1837. His father was a pastor who accepted a charge in the town of Leyden. In 1862, at Leyden University, he was awarded the doctor of theology. Afterwards, having been an orthodox Calvinist, he began holding pastorates in Utrecht, Amsterdam, and others. He had served eleven years in the pastorate. During this time, he had organized a Christian political party, called the Anti-Revolutionary Party (which supported the Word of God), and had led that party in thirteen national parliamentary campaigns. While also a leader for this party, he also took part in editing for a weekly De Heraut.

In 1874, he began serving as a member in the houses of the Netherlands' legislature. He was recognized as a profound leader in private education, and in 1880 the Amsterdam Free University was opened. This university was dedicate to Calvinistic ideals.

Kuyper broke away from the state church in 1886 and established the Reformed Churches soon afterwards in the Netherlands. And in 1901 he became the prime minister of his homeland. He held this position for four years.


Kuyper's great contribution is the fact that the Christian faith is both for salvation and for the rest of life. Kuyper created a powerful a Christian worldview that later influenced the thinking of Cornelius Van Til at Princeton and Westminster Seminary.

His worldview created a way of looking at life: personal, church, and public, based on the truth's of the Bible.
