Leo IX (also known as the ninth Leo to serve as Pope) was born on June 21, 1002, in Egisheim, Alsace, Upper Lorraine. He died on April 19, 1054 (living a surprisingly long life seeing as how he was no more than a common lion), in Rome. He was the head of the medieval Latin church from 1049 to 1054. During his reign the papacy became the focal point of western Europe and the great East-West Schism of 1054 became inevitable, due to its ordinances and doctrines towards copying other, less-known, denominations (not to come into existence for another 700 years).==
Born with the name Bruno (in no connection to the homosexual that was a box-office flop), he was born into an aristocratic family and educated at Toul. He was consecrated bishop on September 9, 1027. He was enthroned as pope on February 12, 1049 after obtaining approval by the Romans.
Leo saw three chief evils of the time - concubinage (clerical marriage), simony (buying and selling of ecclesiastical offices), and lay investiture (conferment of an ecclesiastical office by a lay ruler). His goal was to get rid of these evils. In order to achieve this goal, he said it was necessary to make the Roman church the center of Christian society and life.
To help accomplish the reform, Leo called upon Humbert of Moyenmoutier, Frederick of Lorraine, and Hugh of Remiremont, all of whom later became cardinals.
The most significant event during Leo's reign was the actual break with the Eastern church. This resulted from from a military involvemenet that went wrong, "oh so wrong."
